Meet the Guides
Karla DeVries and Leslie Wallick met as graduate students at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts.  After years of taking courses and working on projects at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they know it like the backs of their hands.  While they are serious about art, they think people learn best when they are having fun, so they try to bring that philosophy to all their tours.

At the age of 9 Karla fell in love with art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shortly before accidentally setting off the alarm in the armor section.  She grew up in San Diego, California and attended UC San Diego as an undergraduate. She has worked at the San Diego Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and as a teaching assistant at New York University. She now teaches Non-Western Art at Montclair State University. Her specialties are Indian, Islamic and 19th-20th century European art.

Leslie has been making art her whole life and always sought inspiration in museums.  As an undergraduate at the University of Vermont however, she decided she wanted a major that didn't have a hacky-sac prerequisite, so she turned her attention to art history. Her specialties are Ancient Near Eastern, Greek and Roman art and archaeology and she has spent several summers working as an archaeologist at the ancient site of Aphrodisias in Turkey.  She has worked as an adjunct instructor of Western Art at NYU and at the Alexander S. Onassis Cultural Center.

Alicia, the Art Masters Intern is a rising senior in high school from California. She says, "Art is a vital part of my life. I hope to incorporate my love of art into whatever profession I choose. Aside from art, I am passionate about biology, wildlife conservation and the environment. In college I am interested in studying art conservation, zoology, or medicine."
