Emperors Never Die in Bed: Roman Imperial Portraiture
(Metropolitan Museum of Art)
Beware the Ides of March! On March 15, 44 BCE, Julius Caesar was assassinated on the steps of the Senate house, allegedly uttering the eternal words: "Et tu Brute?" (Actually though, Shakespeare made that one up.)
With his death, a power struggle ensued, ultimately delivering his heir apparent, Octavian, into a position of unprecedented autonomous power. And so began the Roman Imperial period; a near 300-year period punctuated by the leadership of some of the most nefarious, outrageous and megalomaniacal characters in world history.
This 90-minute tour will focus on the most useful means of propaganda an emperor had at his disposal: his own image. We will discuss who these men were and why they chose to depict themselves as they did.
